Suede vs Leather: Key Differences and Which One to Choose

Leather and suede both come from animal hide, yet they behave very differently: one is tougher and more forgiving around water, the other is softer and more demanding. Knowing the difference helps you choose the right pair — and just as importantly, care for it the right way.
Where the difference comes from
A hide has two sides. The outer side — the grain side — has tightly bound fibers and takes the brunt of the environment, which makes it the tougher layer. Leather keeps this side, so it holds its shape, resists scuffs better, and has a smooth surface that wipes clean easily.
Suede is made from the inner side of the hide. The tougher grain layer is removed, leaving a soft, porous, velvety surface. That nap is what makes suede attractive — and also why it picks up dust and soaks up water faster than smooth leather.
Quick comparison
| Criteria | Leather (smooth) | Suede |
|---|---|---|
| Durability | Higher, holds shape well | Softer, mats and scuffs sooner |
| Water tolerance | Better, thanks to the finish | Absorbs quickly, marks easily |
| Comfort out of the box | Needs a break-in period | Soft and snug from day one |
| Hot, humid weather | Traps heat | More breathable |
| Typical price | Usually higher | Usually more accessible |
| Care routine | Condition and polish regularly | Dry brushing and waterproofing spray |
Choose leather when
- You wear the pair daily and need something that keeps its shape through daily wear.
- Your workplace calls for dress shoes — smooth leather oxfords and boots look sharper.
- You don't mind regular conditioning and polishing in exchange for longevity.
Choose suede when
- You like the matte, velvety look and the soft feel from the first wear.
- Your daily rotation is sneakers, chinos and tees — suede fits that style better.
- You're willing to keep the pair out of the rain and spend a few minutes brushing after each wear.
Caring for leather: condition first, shine after
A simple two-layer routine works for smooth leather:
- Cream polish — the base layer that feeds moisture into the leather and helps prevent drying and cracking.
- Wax polish — the outer layer that adds shine and a thin barrier against splashes.
Brush off dust with a dry cloth before polishing. After each wear, insert wooden shoe trees — cedar absorbs moisture from sweat and keeps the toe box in shape while the pair rests. Rotate the trees between the pairs you wear most.

Caring for suede: keep it dry and brush it often
Suede never gets cream or wax polish — wax clings to the nap and mats the surface. Instead:
- Brush regularly with a suede brush to lift dust out of the fibers.
- Erase small marks with a suede eraser, using light pressure.
- Reapply waterproofing spray about every three months, more often in rainy season — always patch-test on a hidden spot first.
Let the spray dry completely before wearing. For a full cleaning routine, see our guide on cleaning suede shoes properly.

When should you hand them to EXTRIM?
Some conditions usually get worse with home treatment:
- Water stains that spread across suede, or nap that has matted into patches or faded.
- Leather that has dried out, cracked, or developed mold.
- Oil, paint, or ink stains that have set into the surface.
EXTRIM's shoe cleaning and spa service treats each material properly: suede spa from 200,000 VND per pair, deep cleaning from 150,000 VND per pair (2026 reference; final price confirmed after inspection).
