How to Clean White Shoes Safely, by Material

White shoes show every speck of dirt, and they are also the easiest to ruin with the wrong product. Most of the familiar "whitening hacks" online — lemon, toothpaste, nail polish remover, bleach — cause blotches, scratch the finish, or loosen the glue over time. The right approach is to treat by material, not by recipe.
Identify the material first
- Smooth leather (Air Force 1, Stan Smith): tolerates water — use a mild soap solution and a soft cloth.
- Suede / nubuck: keep ordinary washing away — use a dedicated dry brush and eraser. See the full suede cleaning guide.
- Canvas / mesh: handles water well — soft brush with a diluted solution.
When unsure, start with the driest method — wipe a hidden spot with a damp cloth and watch how the surface reacts.
Light stains: a mild soap solution
- Remove the laces and wash them separately with soap.
- Mix 1 teaspoon of mild dish soap into about half a liter of warm water.
- Dip a soft-bristle brush, shake off the excess, and scrub gently in circles over small sections of the upper and tongue.
- Wipe everything down with a well-wrung damp cloth — soap residue left to dry causes blotches on white leather.
- Stuff with white paper to hold the shape and air dry in the shade for about a day.

Rubber soles and the midsole: an eraser does the rest
Black scuffs and marks on a white midsole need no chemicals. Wet a melamine sponge, wring it out, and rub each mark gently — it handles most stains on white rubber. For stubborn sticky spots, wrap a microfiber cloth around a finger, dip it in the soap solution, and rub for a few minutes.
One important note: a midsole yellowed by oxidation or sun exposure cannot be bleached back at home — the damage sits inside the material, and it needs a professional deyellowing treatment. Details in white shoes turned yellow: what to do.

Heavily stained white canvas: baking soda
For white canvas with old, set-in dirt, mix baking soda with a little water into a paste — do not mix it with vinegar, which fades fabric color and attacks the sole glue. Apply the paste to stains with a soft brush, scrub lightly, wait 15–30 minutes, then wipe off with a damp cloth several times. The rubber outsole can take a stiffer brush.

What not to use
- Bleach: makes fabric brittle, yellows it back after a few washes, and leaves uneven white patches that look worse than the stain.
- Nail polish remover (acetone): dissolves the protective finish, opens the glue and leaves marks on leather.
- Lemon and toothpaste: acid plus abrasion leaves blotches and scratches the finish — on leather it also darkens the rubbed area.
- Vinegar on leather and glued areas: the acid wears down the finish and weakens the glue.
- Direct sunlight and dryers: heat yellows the white midsole and opens the glue.
To keep white shoes clean longer, watch the habits too: wipe fresh stains the same day, never store shoes damp, and reapply a water-repellent spray after each cleaning. See also how to keep white sneakers white.
