Storing Leather & Suede Boots in Rainy Season — Anti-Mold Guide

A long rainy season is when leather and suede boots degrade fastest: soaked one day, quietly damp the next, and moldy before you notice. Two principles prevent most of the damage — treat the boots the same day they get wet, and never store them until they are fully dry.

After every wet day: treat the boots that evening

  • Blot the surface dry with a towel; for smooth leather, follow with a second wipe using a clean damp cloth to lift mud residue.
  • Stuff the shafts with dry paper to absorb moisture and hold their shape, stand the boots upright and remove the laces.
  • Air-dry in a breezy, shaded spot — away from harsh sun and every heat source; dryers shrink, wrinkle and crack the leather and open the glue seams.
  • For suede: once fully dry, brush the nap back up in one direction. Brushing while damp mats the nap and traps dirt.

If the boots were soaked through, go further — our water-damaged suede rescue guide covers the full routine.

The golden rule: no storage until fully dry

Boxing or closeting boots while still damp is a mold recipe. After a wet day, give the boots another 24–48 hours of open-air drying before they go away. Test by touching the lining and toe area — cool or damp means not ready. A few drying notes:

  • Never seal wet boots in plastic to "block the humidity" — plastic traps the water inside the leather and creates better mold conditions than open air.
  • Don't stuff boots with printed newspaper — ink transfers onto the lining.
  • Keep them near a ventilated window, away from damp walls and freshly mopped floors.

Long-term storage once boot season ends

If the boots will sit unused for months:

  1. Clean them first. Mud, dust and small stains left over a whole wet season set permanently. Clean by material — suede gets dry brushing and an eraser, smooth leather a mild wipe — see our leather boot cleaning guide.
  2. Support the shafts. Boot shapers or loosely crumpled dry paper hold the form; overstuffing stretches the shafts out of shape.
  3. Control humidity. A small silica gel pouch in each boot, replaced when the granules change color.
  4. Breathable packaging. Non-woven fabric bags or ventilated boxes — never plastic tied shut for a whole season.
  5. Pick the spot. Dry and shaded, away from damp floors, rain-facing windows and long hours of direct sun.
  6. Check every 3–4 weeks. Open the packaging, smell-test, and look for white or black dots along stitching and the sole edge.

Active mold prevention during the rains

  • Reapply waterproofing spray every 4–6 weeks on suede; smooth leather can take a light wax conditioning once fully dry.
  • Rotate pairs: give boots a one- to two-day rest between wears so internal sweat and humidity escape.
  • Deodorize monthly with an overnight baking-soda box — details in our deodorizing damp shoes guide.
  • Use wooden (cedar or pine) shoe trees for smooth-leather boots — they absorb light moisture and hold the shaft better than paper.

What not to do

  • Blow-dry soaked boots or set them near stoves and heaters.
  • Store in a tied plastic bag, especially while the boots are still damp.
  • Apply wax or cream polish to suede — it clumps and destroys the nap.
  • Sprinkle unfamiliar powders inside to "absorb moisture" — they can stain the lining.
  • Put boots away during a humid spell without checking the lining first.

When to send it to EXTRIM

White specks or black mold patches on suede, leather gone stiff and wrinkled after a soaking, shadowy water stains at the toe and heel, or a damp smell that will not leave — these are where home treatment risks making it worse. EXTRIM cleans by material (suede spa from 200,000 VND per pair, 2026 reference), handles stain and mold removal on fabric from 150,000–300,000 VND, and applies three-layer nano waterproofing at 150,000 VND to help boots shrug off the rain. See our shoe cleaning & spa service or why leather shoes get moldy.
