How to Repair Shoes and Boots by Damage Type

Shoes and boots fail in very different ways: some issues are just a short lifted edge of glue, others are a hole in the middle of the sole. Identifying the damage type before you reach for the glue decides whether a home repair makes sense at all.
What to prepare before any repair
- A dedicated shoe adhesive (the label must state it bonds rubber, EVA, PU or leather — not a quick-fix all-purpose glue).
- Low-concentration isopropyl alcohol (max 70%) with a cloth or cotton pads.
- Fine sandpaper, paper tape, and a clamp or a heavy object for pressure.
- A stiff brush to clean the repair area first.
The rule for every type of damage: the surface must be clean and fully dry before glue goes on, and the joint needs continuous pressure overnight before you wear the shoes again.
Sole separation and lifted glue
This is the most common failure on well-worn shoes and trekking boots. For a small lifted edge:
- Remove dirt with a stiff brush, wipe the gap with alcohol and let it dry.
- Lightly sand both surfaces with fine sandpaper to improve grip.
- Apply a thin, even layer of glue to both faces, let it tack up per the label, then press firmly.
- Clamp or tape it in place overnight before wearing.
Know the limit: if the gap runs longer than a third of the sole edge, or the sole has separated across its whole face, glue is no longer the answer — the sole needs a full reglue with stitching reinforcement. The full breakdown is in our guide to sole separation and loose glue. 2026 reference prices: small detail reglue 100,000 VND, edge reinforcement (less than 1/3 detached) 250,000 VND, full sole reglue with stitching 450,000 VND.
Punctured or cracked waterproof boots
A small hole in the sole can quietly end a boot's waterproofing. Repair it early while the job is still simple:
- Wipe the area with alcohol and let it dry.
- Work a flexible shoe adhesive into the crack or hole in the sole, filling the small gaps.
- Set the boot flat and let it cure completely for 8–12 hours.
The stitched seams of waterproof boots are a different matter: ordinary glue rarely holds on a seam that flexes constantly. If water still gets in after your repair, the seams need a technician. Boots worn through a lot of rain deserve a full check too — deep boot cleaning runs 150,000–250,000 VND if you want them cleaned at the same time.
Worn heels and soles
A heel worn at an angle is the issue you should not wait on: the longer you walk on it, the more your posture follows the wear. For a worn heel, replacing the heel cap is the correct fix — not building the worn spot back up with glue, which wears unevenly and peels quickly. 2026 reference: heel cap replacement for dress shoes and heels, 250,000 VND.
For a sports or trekking sole worn flat with no tread left, adding a protective layer on the toe or heel (Vibram sole protection, 599,000 VND) restores grip and preserves the original sole. If the sole is worn deep into its mid-layer, it needs a full resole (standard 550,000 VND). We compare the options in worn sports shoe outsoles: repair or replace.
Torn rand and lace panels
The rand is the rubber rim around the base of trekking boots; a torn lace panel means laces can no longer pull tight. Both are glue-repairable while the tear is small:
- Wipe dust around the tear with alcohol.
- Work glue into the gap or onto both faces of the tear, using a toothpick to reach the bottom.
- Press the edges together, tape it in place and leave it overnight.
A tear on the upper wider than a finger, or one running into a seam, should move to stitching instead — 200,000–350,000 VND. Stitches hold the layers together even as glue ages, which makes them the durable choice for load-bearing areas.
When to send your pair to EXTRIM?
Stop DIY and send the pair in when:
- The sole edge is opening up fast, or nearly the whole edge has separated.
- The boot has a wide puncture or was soaked for a long time and you suspect water reached the lining.
- The heel is badly worn at an angle and you feel yourself limping — it needs to be rebuilt to the original shape.
- A tear on the upper touches a seam or sits at the toe or heel, where load is highest (heel/toe reattachment 250,000–400,000 VND).
EXTRIM's repair workshop handles each item separately with a 2-month repair warranty; the final price is confirmed after we inspect the condition. See our shoe repair service, or compare home fixes against professional costs in shoe repair by budget.
