Shoe Repair by Budget: Home Fixes, Cheap Upgrades, or a Professional

Worn heels, scuffed leather, slippery soles, or an uncomfortable fit don't mean a shoe is finished. What matters is choosing the right level of treatment: some fixes take minutes at home, others get worse when you DIY them.
This article covers four common problems, each with three cost levels. Prices are 2026 editorial reference points — final quotes always depend on the actual condition of the shoe.
1. Scuffs on leather
Before treating anything, check whether the "scratch" is actually just dirt — rub lightly with a finger or a dry cloth.
Free, at home: shallow black marks on smooth leather often lift with a simple eraser. Test a hidden spot first, use short, light strokes. Not for suede, nubuck, or patent finishes.
Low cost: color-matched wax or cream covers light scuffs on smooth leather — roughly 100,000–300,000 VND per tin. Choose a shade one step lighter than the shoe and build thin layers instead of one thick coat.

Professional: deep scuffs that cut into the leather need cleaning, recoloring, and a protective finish matched to the material — the wrong tint is harder to fix than the original scuff. See our shoe repair service.
2. Worn-down heels
Concrete and office floors wear heels faster than you'd expect. Uneven wear slowly tilts the whole shoe's stance.
Free, at home: rotate at least two pairs through the week. Wearing the same pair daily accelerates wear noticeably.
Low cost: a new heel cap for dress shoes or heels — 250,000 VND per pair on the 2026 EXTRIM price sheet. Rubber caps also soften the hard clack on hard floors.
Professional: badly uneven heels need replacement matched to the original shape and a check of the sole body — send photos for a quote before the job is accepted.
3. Slippery soles
Leather soles or worn-flat soles on polished stone are a real fall risk, not just an awkward feeling.
Free, at home: for new or clean, dry soles, roughen the surface with coarse sandpaper or rough concrete to add grip. This is temporary — repeat once the sole smooths over.
Professional: a rubber or Vibram sole adds — anti-slip grip, water resistance, and protection for the original sole. 2026 price sheet: 599,000 VND for Vibram or Sole 3M sole protection, 799,000 VND for Sole Gel molded to the tread.

Skip hairspray or honey tricks on soles: the sticky layer collects dust, dirties fast, and gums up the surface — more cleanup than benefit.
4. Tight or stiff shoes
Free, at home: try shoes on in the late afternoon (feet are slightly swollen then) when buying. For pairs you already own, wear thin socks around the house for a few sessions to soften the fit. You can't turn a wrong size into a right one — stretching won't fix the fit.
Low cost: gel inserts or heel grips, roughly 50,000–150,000 VND. They reduce friction and pressure points but don't make the shoe wider.
Professional: machine stretching only suits real leather; synthetic or patent finishes can crack. A technician will tell you first whether your pair can be stretched.
Prevention is cheaper than repair
The cheapest repair is the one you never need: add a protective sole while the shoe is new, reapply waterproofing regularly, use shoe trees for leather shoes, and rotate 2–3 pairs. Prevention always costs less than restoration.
When to hand them to EXTRIM
If you're unsure about the condition — deep scuffs, uneven sole wear, failing glue — send photos first through our shoe repair service or book an assessment. EXTRIM confirms what can be improved, what can't, and the price before accepting the job.
Public case studies
