How to Clean Mud and Dirt Off Leather Boots at Home

Leather boots shrug off rain and mud — but leather itself is a sensitive material: leave wet mud on too long and it dries out, creases and cracks. The key to cleaning muddy boots is the order of operations; going backwards drives the dirt in deeper. Here is a simple step-by-step routine that works at home.

Step 1: Let the mud dry completely first
It sounds backwards, but do not wipe wet mud. Wiping presses fine silt into the leather's pores and the stitching, spreading the mess into blotches. Park the boots somewhere shaded and ventilated and let the mud dry fully before you touch it.
Never speed this up with a hair dryer or direct sunlight — heat shrinks leather, blisters its finish and loosens the sole glue.
Step 2: Remove the laces and clean them separately
Pull the laces out and soak them in a bowl of warm water with a little soap for 5–8 minutes, scrub gently with a toothbrush, then rinse. Don't wring the laces — lay them flat on a dry towel to air-dry so they keep their shape. Wipe the metal aglets separately with a soft cloth. If the laces are leather, swap the soap for a leather-safe cleaner.
Step 3: Knock off the dried mud
Once the mud has hardened, tap the two soles together outdoors, or tap the sole against a hard surface to break the mud loose. Only tap the sole area — avoid hitting the leather body. Scrape the stubborn bits with a wooden stick or brush them away.
Step 4: Brush the whole upper
With a soft brush (horsehair is the classic choice), brush the entire upper back and forth with even strokes, covering the stitching lines and any crevices where mud settles. This step removes most of the residue without any water at all.
Step 5: Clean the leather with proper soap
Insert wooden shoe trees to hold the shape. Apply leather soap (or a dedicated leather shoe cleaner) to a damp microfiber cloth and wipe the whole surface in small circular motions, a little at a time. The cloth only needs to be damp — never rinse boots under the tap; too much water weakens the sole glue and distorts the leather.

Follow with a second clean, damp cloth to lift off the soap, then let the boots air-dry for at least 15 minutes and inspect. Repeat gently on any spots that remain.
Step 6: Condition after cleaning
Almost every cleaner strips the leather's natural oils along with the dirt, so conditioning is not optional if you want to avoid cracks:
- Test the conditioner on a hidden spot first — the tongue is a good place — to make sure it doesn't darken the leather or leave marks.
- If it passes, work a thin, even layer over the whole boot with a soft cloth in small circles.
- Massage lightly so it absorbs, wipe away the excess, and let the boots air-dry.

Nubuck and suede boots follow a completely different routine: a suede brush and eraser, never smooth-leather conditioner. See our guide on cleaning suede shoes in 6 simple steps for that material.
Common mistakes when cleaning leather boots
- Wiping wet mud right away: it drives dirt into the leather and leaves blotches.
- Using vinegar or strong cleaners on leather: dries and fades it — stick to products made for leather.
- Heat drying or sun-drying: the leather shrinks, blisters, and the sole glue lets go.
- Skipping the conditioner: clean today, cracked in a few months.
- Storing boots in a box before they are fully dry: that's how mold starts — see why leather shoes get moldy and how to fix it.
