How to Clean Crocs Without Shrinking Them, by Material

Crocs are light, tough and easy to wear — and exactly because of their signature material, easy to ruin with the wrong washing habits: hot water, harsh sun, or storage near heat. Once the foam shrinks, it never returns to its original size. This guide splits the job by Crocs version so you clean the right material the right way.

Why Crocs need their own cleaning routine
Classic Crocs are made from EVA foam (the brand calls it Croslite): a single molded foam panel — light, springy, with no stitching or glue. The upside is that water will not hurt it. The downside is that heat makes the foam shrink and warp. Hot water, a car bonnet, a washing machine parked by a sunny window, or a hair dryer are all enough to leave a pair noticeably shorter — and shrunken foam does not expand back.
The second rule: strong solvents such as acetone or paint thinner eat into the foam surface, leaving dents or shiny scorch marks. Mild dish soap is all you need.
Washing classic one-piece Crocs
- Pull out all the charms (jibbitz) from the surface.
- Mix cool or lukewarm water with a little mild dish soap.
- Soak the shoes for 10–15 minutes to loosen mud and sweat.
- Scrub all over with a soft-bristle brush, working the vent holes and the inner edge of the heel strap.
- For stubborn grime, dip the damp brush in baking soda and scrub again — it cleans and deodorises gently.
- Rinse in cool water, towel dry, and air dry in a shaded, airy spot.
About the washing machine: only consider it if your pair is a single-piece clog with no glued parts, on a cold cycle inside a laundry bag. Shoes with glued soles or attached details should never go in — the spin force breaks the glue and warps the form.

Fur-lined (fuzzy) versions
The lining is fixed inside the shoe and does not come out, so wash the whole pair:
- Soak the shoes in warm (not hot) soapy water for about 15 minutes.
- Gently squeeze the lining repeatedly so sweat oils and dirt work their way out.
- Rinse thoroughly until all the soap is gone, pressing the water out gently — never wring or twist the shoes.
- Air dry in the shade, tilted so water drains out of the lining; a dry towel stuffed inside speeds up the process.
Furry lining dries far more slowly than you expect. Wearing a pair while it is still damp inside is the fastest route to a bad smell.
Leather and leather-trimmed versions
Versions with leather parts cannot be soaked like foam:
- Wipe the leather with a well-wrung damp cloth; never submerge the pair.
- Once dry, apply a proper leather conditioner so the leather does not crack.
- Scrub the foam sole as in the classic method, but keep water off the leather as much as possible.

Deodorising and everyday care
- Sweat collects in the lining and feeds bacteria; rinse the pair every 2–4 weeks depending on how often you wear them.
- Quick deodorising: sprinkle baking soda inside overnight, shake the powder out fully in the morning.
- Store in a cool, airy place — never on a radiator, in a car boot, or anywhere near heat.
- After the beach or rain, wipe the pair dry before storing; trapped water makes the lining smell first.
