How to Clean and Care for a PU Leather Bag the Right Way

PU leather bags cost less than real leather, wipe clean easily and shrug off light rain. But the polyurethane coating has its own care rules: clean it right and the bag looks fresh for years; treat it like real leather and the coating cracks well before its time.
How PU leather differs from real leather
PU leather is a polyurethane layer bonded to a fabric base — see what vegan leather is for how the types compare. Two things matter for care:
- Stains stay on the surface. They do not soak into the core the way they do with real leather, so a damp cloth handles most situations.
- Conditioner cannot soak in. Every leather conditioner — oil, cream, balm — just sits on top of PU, leaving a sticky film that attracts dust and can soften the coating over time.
Routine cleaning: a damp cloth is enough
- Dampen a soft cloth with warm water, wring it out well, and wipe the whole bag in one direction.
- Dry it with a clean cloth so no water streaks remain.
- After rain, or after the bag has been handled a lot with wet hands, give it a quick wipe — standing water dulls and discolors the coating.
Once every one to two weeks is plenty for a bag in daily use.

Stubborn stains: a mild soap solution
When a damp cloth is not enough, use a mild solution rather than anything aggressive:
- Mix one teaspoon of mild dish soap into half a liter of warm water.
- Dip a soft cloth, wring it nearly dry, and rub the stain gently in small circles.
- Wipe the area again with a clean damp cloth to remove soap residue, then dry.
Test on a hidden spot first — some thin PU coatings discolor if you scrub too hard.
What never to do with a PU leather bag
- Never use real-leather conditioner. This is the most common mistake: oil-based products made for animal hide do nothing for PU except coat the surface, collect dust and speed up peeling.
- No acetone, bleach or strong alcohol — they eat the coating, and the discoloration cannot be fixed at home.
- No direct sunlight and no blow-drying: heat blisters and cracks the coating.
- Do not soak the bag or run water directly over it.
Storing the bag when not in use
Put the bag in a breathable dust bag, stuff it with clean paper to hold its shape, and keep it somewhere cool and dry — see the full routine in how to store handbags you are not using. Do not hang a heavy bag on a hook for months; PU straps stretch and never recover.

When to send the bag to EXTRIM
- The coating is peeling, cracking or turning tacky — this is material failure, not a cleaning problem.
- Deep grime on handles and corners, or a musty smell from long storage.
- A torn strap, a stuck zipper or tarnished hardware: strap repairs start at 800,000 VND, zipper and hardware replacement from 150,000 VND (2026 reference, confirmed after inspection).
The bag spa service at EXTRIM cleans synthetic leather with products matched to the coating — not with a real-leather conditioning routine. Cleaning runs 300,000–600,000 VND by size, full spa 500,000–800,000 VND.
