How to Care for and Store Suede Shoes: Habits That Keep the Nap Fresh

Suede looks great but demands attention: dust settles into the nap quickly, water leaves blotches, and once the fibers mat down they are hard to lift again. The good news is that caring for suede takes no expensive gear — just a few habits applied at the right time: before, during and after each wear. If you're not sure how suede differs from smooth leather, start with our suede vs leather comparison.
Why suede needs its own routine
Suede's velvety surface is made of thousands of short fibers — exactly where dust, water and oil collect far more than on smooth leather. Water soaks in and disturbs the nap, leaving uneven marks; dust left sitting works its way into the fibers and hardens.
Before you wear them: one spray beats every rescue attempt
- Apply a suede-specific waterproofing spray about every three months; more often in rainy season.
- Always patch-test on a hidden spot (inner heel, tongue edge) before spraying the whole pair.
- Spray from about 30 cm away and let the shoes dry completely before wearing.
This layer won't make the shoes fully waterproof, but it buys you time — the window you need to blot a splash before it sets.
After each wear: three minutes at the end of the day
- Dry brush with a suede brush to lift dust out before it packs into the fibers.
- Insert wooden shoe trees — they pull moisture from sweat and keep the toe box in shape.
- Air the shoes in a ventilated spot; never box a pair while it's still damp or warm.
Rotating between two or three pairs is part of storage too: suede needs rest time to release moisture fully.
When the shoes get caught in the rain
- Blot with a soft cloth — blot, don't rub. Rubbing spreads the stain outward.
- Stuff the shoes with dry, absorbent paper, replacing it two or three times as it saturates.
- Let them air-dry naturally in a ventilated spot. No hair dryers, no direct sun, no radiators.
- Once fully dry, brush the nap back up in one pass.

If water marks have already dried into pale blotches, the treatment is different from prevention — see our guide on saving water-damaged suede shoes.
Long-term storage
- Clean and fully dry the pair first — storing shoes dirty or damp is the fastest way to grow mold.
- Choose a dry, ventilated spot; breathable fabric bags or boxes beat sealed plastic bags.
- Place absorbent paper inside, but don't pack it tight enough to distort the shape.
- Check every two to four weeks — early-stage dampness or mold is easy to fix.
- Keep pairs away from direct sunlight and heat sources like windows or appliances.
What never to do on suede
- No soaking in water, no washing machine — both ruin the nap and open the glue seams.
- No cream or wax polish: those belong to smooth leather and will mat the surface, and are very hard to remove afterward.
- No cooking oil, Vaseline, egg white or similar home remedies for "conditioning" or stain removal.
- No alcohol, acetone, or harsh solvents on the surface.
- No heat drying or ironing near suede.
Quick FAQ
Can suede shoes be cleaned? Yes — but with dry methods: brushing, eraser, and a suede-specific cleaner used sparingly. See the full routine in how to clean suede shoes properly.
How often should I reapply waterproofing spray? About every three months; in Saigon's rainy season, every six to eight weeks.
Do stored pairs need polish? No. Polish is for smooth leather. For suede, cleaning, waterproofing and dry storage are enough.
Which shoe trees should I use? Wooden trees that absorb moisture are best. Plastic trees hold the shape but not the moisture, so they're a stopgap.
When should you hand them to EXTRIM?
