How Long Do Shoes Last With Good Care? 3 Signs to Watch

"How long does a pair of shoes last?" has no single answer — lifespan depends on the shoe's quality, how you move, and how you care for it. But there are clear reference points, and more importantly, clear signs that a pair has reached the end of its useful life. Reading those signs correctly tells you when to repair and when to replace, so you don't waste money.

Everyday shoes: about one year of daily wear

A pair worn almost every day typically stays in good shape for about one year. Well-made shoes that are rotated and stored properly can last considerably longer; cheaper pairs worn without rest can break down within a few months. The reason is that everyone walks differently — stride, stance and activity level make wear patterns unique to each wearer.

Running shoes: measure in kilometers, not years

Running shoes should be replaced after roughly 500–700 km. The EVA foam in the midsole compresses with every step and never bounces back like it used to — like a car tire, once it has covered its distance it needs replacing. When the cushioning goes flat, impact transfers straight into your feet and knees; the telltale signs are foot pain, cramps and a shoe that feels noticeably "dead" compared to when it was new.

Three signs that a shoe is worn out

Before deciding to replace a pair, check these three areas one by one.

1. Upper and lining wear

Look closely at the upper for holes, tears or deformation. Check the lining around the heel and the footbed: if the lining is torn and the insole cushioning has gone flat, it is time to replace the pair — especially if you have worn it daily for six months or more.

2. Compressed midsole

The midsole is the cushioning layer between the upper and the outsole; it absorbs impact as you move. Over time EVA foam wrinkles, thins out and loses its rebound. Without cushioning, your feet absorb the full force of every step and tire much faster.

3. Unevenly worn outsole

Inspect the part of the sole that touches the ground, especially the heel and the ball of the foot. Place the shoes on a flat surface: if they sit level, the outsole is still doing its job; if they tip noticeably to one side, the sole has worn unevenly and needs to be re-soled or replaced.

Different materials fail in different ways

Athletic shoes with foam midsoles usually die through the cushioning: the upper still looks fine, but the flattened foam makes your feet tired. Smooth leather is more durable on the surface and gives out at the heel and sole — the parts that can be repaired with a heel cap replacement or a new sole. Suede and canvas tend to fail on the surface: fading, fuzzing and staining — handled with a deep clean and color restoration rather than throwing the pair away.

Care habits that keep shoes alive longer

  • Rotate between 2–3 pairs: materials need time to release moisture after each wear.
  • Air shoes out regularly and store them in a dry, shaded place away from direct sunlight.
  • Replace insoles when the cushioning flattens — more comfortable, and it helps prevent blisters.
  • Clean after every heavy-soiling day and let shoes dry naturally; never use a dryer.
  • Use shoe trees or stuffed paper to hold the shape in storage.

Repair or replace? Do the math first

A worn sole, a rounded heel or loose glue does not always mean the shoe is finished. For a good leather pair or a hard-to-replace model, a 250,000 VND heel cap replacement or a 599,000 VND full Vibram outsole (2026 reference prices) usually costs far less than buying a comparable new pair. For a low-priced shoe where repair approaches the original purchase cost, replacing makes more sense — the final call is confirmed after the actual condition is inspected.

When should you send your shoes to EXTRIM?

Flattened midsoles, unevenly worn soles, detached soles, torn linings or stubborn odor are hard to fix at home. EXTRIM's shoe cleaning and spa service cleans by material (deep cleaning from 150,000 VND per pair, 2026 reference), and when the sole or glue is failing, our shoe repair service replaces heel caps, re-soles and stitches the upper so a still-good pair lasts for years.
