Regular cleaning doesn't mean washing your shoes on a rigid calendar. A pair worn every day, in the rain, or on the court needs checking far sooner than one reserved for special occasions. The key is not waiting until dirt and odor have set in before acting.

Dust and Grime Accelerate Surface Wear

Sand, soil, and street dust can lodge in fabric fibers, sole grooves, and creases. As you keep wearing the shoes, friction between that grit and the material raises the risk of scuffs, fraying, and staining. Dry-brushing and spot-cleaning early is far easier to manage than aggressively scrubbing a stain that has been there for weeks.

Moisture Needs to Be Controlled

Sweat, rainwater, and shoes that never fully dry create a damp smell and can let mold develop in enclosed spaces. Removing the insoles, air-drying properly, and rotating between pairs are simple habits that should come before any deep deodorizing or mold treatment.

If odor returns quickly, mold spots appear, or the lining has changed color, surface cleaning may not be enough. At that point the insoles, cushioning layers, and hard-to-reach areas all need to be inspected.

• Daily wear: check weekly, brush off dust, and let shoes rest between wears.
• Rainy days or dusty environments: dry immediately and check the sole edges and lining after each use.
• Occasional wear: check before long-term storage and before wearing again.
• Suede, smooth leather, or specialty materials: use products matched to the material — never force one process onto everything.
