Shoe Cleaning Methods Compared: Cost vs. Effectiveness

One dirty pair of shoes can be handled several ways: hand washing with a mild solution, the washing machine, a dedicated cleaning kit, or a professional shoe care studio. The cost ranges from nearly nothing to a few hundred thousand dong, but so do the results and the risks. This article compares the four methods on exactly those two criteria so you can pick the right one.

Quick comparison of the four methods

MethodReference cost 2026EffectivenessMain risk
Hand washing, mild solutionNearly 0 (household items)Fair on fresh dirt, fabric uppersScrubbing too hard scratches or loosens glue
Washing machineNearly 0Cleans fast, hard to controlGlue failure, deformation, yellowing
Dedicated cleaning kit50,000–500,000 VND per kitGood, gentler on materialsStill requires the right technique
Professional shoe care studio150,000–300,000 VND per pairHighest, handles heavy stainsYou need a studio with a proper process

1. Hand washing with a mild solution — almost free

This is the cheapest method because it uses what you already have at home: warm water, a mild dish soap, a soft-bristle brush and a clean cloth.

  1. Remove the laces and insoles and wash them separately; stuff paper inside the shoes to hold their shape while wet.
  2. Mix one teaspoon of mild dish soap into about half a liter of warm water.
  3. Dip the soft brush into the solution and scrub in circular motions, a few passes per area; the rubber outsole can take a stiffer brush.
  4. Wipe everything down with a damp cloth until the foam is gone — leftover residue can leave stains as it dries.
  5. Air-dry in a ventilated spot, away from direct sunlight.

This works well on ordinary dust and dirt, but it barely improves set-in stains, oil marks, and it is not suitable for suede at all. The cash cost is only a few thousand dong; what you spend is 30–45 minutes per pair, plus the risk of over-scrubbing.

2. Washing machine — fast, cheap, but you trade for risk

Putting sneakers into a washing machine — convenient but hard on the glue

Machine washing costs almost nothing and saves the most effort, but it is also the easiest way to ruin a pair: the spin force and the volume of water loosen the midsole glue, deform the shoe and invite yellowing. For glued construction, soft EVA midsoles or older pairs, it should be avoided. If you still want to try it on a low-value pair, use a mesh laundry bag, the gentlest cycle, water below 30°C, and skip the spin.

A detailed look at why washing machines damage shoes is in our article the truth about washing shoes in washing machines; for the line between cleaning and laundry, see shoe cleaning vs. shoe laundry.

3. Dedicated solutions and kits — the middle ground

A dedicated shoe cleaning kit runs about 50,000–500,000 VND depending on the product and lasts for many cleanings. The formulas are gentler than laundry detergent, they usually come with the right brushes, and on long-standing dirt they clearly outperform ordinary soap.

The catch is that buying a kit does not guarantee results: too much solution, hard scrubbing on smooth leather, or wetting suede still causes fading and blotches. For suede, a crepe eraser and a rubber brush are far safer than any liquid solution.

4. A professional studio — pricier, but worth it in many cases

Reference prices 2026: deep cleaning 150,000 VND per pair, heavy-soil cleaning 200,000 VND, suede spa 200,000 VND and luxury shoes 300,000 VND. A 3-pair combo at 399,000 VND or a 5-pair combo at 590,000 VND brings the per-pair cost down to 118,000–133,000 VND — less than one bottle of a premium cleaning solution.

What that difference buys you: material-correct cleaning, insole and odor treatment, a properly cleaned outsole, plus a check of the glue lines so wear can be reinforced before the damage gets worse. The trade-offs are a 3–5 day turnaround and the pickup or drop-off, which many studios subsidize for qualifying orders.

DIY or pay for service — a quick calculation

  • Fresh dirt, everyday shoes, time on your hands: hand washing is enough, at nearly zero cost.
  • Buying a kit for the long run: only worth it if you clean 5–6 pairs or more per year; for lighter use, a 5-pair service combo at 590,000 VND works out cheaper and saves the labor.
  • Yellowed soles, set-in stains, suede or high-value pairs: stop there. The 150,000 VND you "saved" can turn into a 450,000 VND sole repaint if the wrong solution is used — all figures are 2026 reference prices.
  • Glued shoes or shoes already coming apart: no machine washing, no soaking; use a cleaning-plus-repair service (+99,000 VND when the repair starts at 250,000 VND) to settle it in one order.

When to send your pair to EXTRIM?

Stop treating it yourself when stains or yellowing resist 1–2 hand washes, when the insole keeps its smell, when suede has faded or matted, when the sole edge starts lifting, or when the pair is valuable enough that you don't want to gamble. EXTRIM's shoe cleaning service in Ho Chi Minh City cleans according to each material, from 150,000 VND per pair (2026 reference; final price confirmed after inspection); the full process is described step by step in our shoe cleaning process. When needed, the sole gets protection or reinforcement in the same order.
