10 Practical Shoe Care Tips for Busy People

Keeping shoes in shape does not require spending your whole afternoon on them. Most shoe damage comes from a few small habits done the wrong way. Below are 10 safe tips — we have filtered out the folk "hacks" that tend to ruin shoes.
1. Stop color transfer from new shoes
New leather shoes sometimes leave color marks on socks or the insole. Dust a thin layer of talcum powder inside the shoe, leave it for a few minutes, then shake out the excess. The thin powder layer reduces color release while the shoes are still new.

2. Wear socks to protect the insole
Socks absorb sweat and reduce the moisture building up inside your shoes — a damp environment is where odor-causing bacteria multiply fastest. This is the cheapest "tip" that most people skip.
3. Kill odor with activated charcoal
Put an activated charcoal pouch (the kind sold for fridges or cars) into each shoe overnight. Charcoal absorbs moisture and odor without wetting the shoes. Another proven method is baking soda in a sealed box — see the details in our Nike Air Force 1 cleaning guide.
4. Stubborn odor — replace the insoles
If deodorizing several times does not help, the cause is usually a sweat-saturated insole. A new pair of insoles fixes the odor at its source and makes the shoes feel fresh again — far more effective than repeating deodorizing rounds.
5. Condition leather shoes on a schedule
Leather dries out with every wear, especially after rain. Apply a dedicated leather conditioner every 2–4 weeks: a thin layer in circular motions, let it absorb, then buff. Avoid substituting with petroleum jelly or body cream — they are not made for tanned leather and can leave blotchy stains.

6. Dry shoes the right way after washing
Shoes need 24–48 hours to air dry fully. Stuff them with paper to absorb moisture and hold the shape, set them in a ventilated spot, near a fan if needed. Never use a hair dryer or a heat source — heat opens glue lines, creases leather and speeds up yellowing.
7. Rain-soaked shoes — act within 24 hours
Blot them dry with a towel as soon as you get home, remove the insoles, stuff with paper and leave them in moving air. Do not let wet shoes "dry" inside a closed closet: a damp sole slowly weakens glue and grows mold. See also moldy shoes — causes and fixes.
8. Use a shoe horn
Forcing the heel down with a spoon or your foot flattens and hardens the heel counter fast. A cheap shoe horn protects both the shoe and your ankle — the single most worthwhile habit change for dress shoes and boots.
9. Dirty suede — use a suede eraser
For dry stains on suede and nubuck, brush with a crepe brush or a dedicated suede eraser, in one direction. No water, no hard scrubbing: the nap flattens easily and loses its texture.
10. Add a waterproofing layer before the rainy season
Apply a protectant matched to the material before wearing shoes outside, and reapply after each cleaning. For longer-lasting protection in the rainy season, EXTRIM offers 3-layer nano waterproofing at 150,000 VND per pair (2026 reference price).
Two "hacks" we removed — do not follow them
- Toothpaste to whiten soles: the abrasives in toothpaste scratch the finish, and scratched soles attract more dirt and yellow faster.
- Vinegar, lemon, rice, cat litter: each carries its own risk — color bleeding, blotchy stains or a new smell. At home, only neutral solutions are safe.
