Remove Shoe Odor With Baking Soda: 2 Safe Methods

Shoe odor comes from bacteria thriving in the damp environment inside the lining. Baking soda is not a perfume that masks the smell — it absorbs moisture and neutralizes odor compounds, the same principle as the box of baking soda you keep in the fridge. It is also the cheapest deodorizing method you can do at home.
Why baking soda works on shoe odor
Sweat is mildly acidic, and damp air inside shoes is where bacteria multiply. Baking soda is mildly alkaline, so it partly neutralizes that environment while pulling moisture out — making it harder for bacteria to keep growing. Three practical advantages:
- Gentler than most odor sprays: no heavy fragrance stuck in the lining.
- No chemical smell blending with sweat afterwards.
- A few thousand dong per treatment.
Know the limit first: baking soda works on odor at the surface and in the air inside the shoe. Odor that has soaked into the lining over months, or musty smell after the shoes got wet, is only reduced temporarily — the source stays.
Method 1: A baking soda pouch — safe for every material
This is the default method, including leather, suede, and shoes with glued soles.
- Put 2–3 tablespoons of baking soda on a thin cloth square or a clean old sock and tie it into a small pouch.
- If you prefer a mild scent, add 1–2 drops of essential oil onto the outside of the pouch — never directly onto the shoe.
- Place one pouch in each shoe right after taking them off and leave overnight, up to 24 hours.
- Remove the pouches and tap the shoes lightly before wearing them again.
A used pouch can be dried out in an airy spot and reused a few times. For leather and suede shoes, this is the only method you should use — the reason is below.
Method 2: Sprinkle directly — canvas and rubber soles only
- Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda inside the shoe and shake to spread it over the contact areas.
- Let the shoes rest for 24 hours in a dry spot.
- Shake all the powder out and tap the shoes before wearing — leftover powder sticks to socks and whitens the lining.
Why not sprinkle directly on leather or suede: the powder pulls out the leather's own moisture, leaves white residue in creases, and makes the leather gradually dry and brittle. Suede holds onto the powder especially badly.
Fixing smelly worn-bare sandals
Sandals worn without socks hold odor that is extremely stubborn. Put about half a cup of baking soda in a large zip bag, drop the sandals in, seal, and shake to coat everything. Wait 24–48 hours, take them out, shake off the powder, and wipe the straps with a damp cloth. For leather or suede straps, wipe every trace of powder off the strap.
Keeping the odor from coming back
- Rotate several pairs — never wear the same pair two days in a row; a shoe needs about a day to dry out fully.
- After rain, remove insoles and laces and dry the shoes in a shaded, airy spot — no direct sun and no dryer.
- Wear socks when possible — they absorb most of the sweat before it reaches the lining.
- For heavy, long-built-up sweat odor, replacing the insoles works better than repeating deodorizing cycles.
