How to Dye Suede Shoes at Home — When to Try, When to Stop

After a year or two of wear, suede shoes tend to fade in patches or lose color overall. Re-dyeing is a reasonable way to refresh them — but suede takes color differently from any other leather, so this guide covers both the method and the cases where you should stop before you start.
First: is this suede actually safe to dye yourself?
Suede is the inner split of the hide, brushed up into a short nap. Close relatives include nubuck and various coated, water-resistant suedes. The safety rules:
- Standard suede — the only type suitable for a home dye job, using a dye made specifically for suede.
- Nubuck — needs its own products and brushing technique; regular suede dye tends to roughen and mat the surface.
- Patent leather or coated suede — the finish barely absorbs dye, so a home job only leaves blotches. Send these to a spa.
- Synthetic "suede" on budget shoes — many are plastic-based fabrics that regular leather dye won't take. Test a hidden spot before committing.
Unsure about the material? A close-up photo of the nap sent to EXTRIM settles it faster than buying the wrong dye.
What you need
- A suede-specific dye in liquid form with a color chart; not smooth-leather wax or cream polish.
- A suede brush, a suede eraser, clean cotton cloths and a small applicator brush.
- Masking tape for the soles, insoles and any smooth leather or metal trims.
- Gloves, and a well-ventilated workspace.
Step 1: Clean and reset the nap
Shoes must be clean and fully dry before dyeing — dust left behind "punches through" the color as speckles. Dry-brush the whole upper in one direction and lift spot stains with an eraser (see our full suede cleaning guide). Finish by brushing the nap flat in one direction so the dye sits evenly.
Step 2: Mask everything you don't want dyed
Tape along the sole edge, set laces aside (dye them separately or replace them), and cover every accessory. Dye on crepe soles or inner lining is very hard to remove, so tape more generously than feels necessary.
Step 3: Test on a hidden area
Apply one thin coat to an inner edge or the tongue's underside, let it dry completely, then inspect: is the color even, and did the nap stiffen? This step decides everything — suede dye always reads slightly darker than the chart and can change the feel of the surface.

Step 4: Build color in thin coats
- Use the applicator brush or a folded cotton pad to press dye onto the surface along the nap, one thin layer at a time.
- Several thin coats always beat one thick coat — heavy coats pool, streak and stiffen the nap.
- Let each coat dry before the next; a full pair usually takes two or three coats.

Step 5: Air-dry and finish
Let the shoes dry naturally for 24 hours in a breezy, shaded spot — no direct sun and no hairdryer, since heat makes dye bleed and leather shrink. Once fully dry, brush the nap back up in one direction, then apply a suede-safe waterproofing spray to lock the color in and reduce bleeding if the shoes get wet.
The limits of a home dye job
- The result always runs darker than the chart, and very dark or very light targets are hard to hit.
- The nap will feel slightly stiffer and rougher after dyeing — this cannot be avoided entirely.
- Pre-existing water marks or uneven fading can "show through" a thin new coat.
- Some premium suedes are tanned in ways that resist predictable color uptake — once dyed wrong, there is no undo.
When to send it to EXTRIM
