How to Clean Felt Shoes at Home — Quick Fixes and Deep Cleaning

Felt shoes have a warm, unmistakably refined look: a dense, fuzzy surface and muted tones that suit cool weather. That same surface, however, picks up dust faster than almost any other material — and if you clean it the wrong way, by soaking or aggressive scrubbing, the nap pills, the felt shrinks and the shape is gone. This guide runs from a 30-second fix to safe at-home stain removal.

How is felt different from canvas?

Felt is made by pressing wool or fabric fibers together with heat and moisture, so its surface is a dense mat of short fibers rather than the visible weave of canvas. The consequence: felt holds heat well but absorbs water aggressively — once soaked, the pressed fibers can shrink and deform, and they do not bounce back.

Canvas is the opposite: a plain, tough weave that tolerates regular wet cleaning. That is why the routine you use for canvas shoes cannot be copied onto felt — with felt, the less water, the better.

The 30-second fix

For everyday dry dust and lint, you barely need any water:

  • Lint roller: roll gently in one direction across the felt. The thin adhesive layer lifts dust and stray fibers without roughening the nap — the single most worthwhile tool for felt shoes.
  • Dry soft-bristle brush: light strokes in one direction to lift the short fibers while removing dust.
  • A barely damp cloth: for a fresh stain, blotting right away saves you far more effort than letting it dry into the fibers.

Wet wipes work in a pinch, but many contain fragrance and preservatives that leave blotches as they dry — a clean damp cotton cloth is the safer option.

Spot cleaning stains at home

Once a stain has set, treat it locally instead of washing the whole pair:

  1. Brush off any dry dirt first.
  2. Mix lukewarm water with a few drops of mild soap and whisk up light foam.
  3. Dip a soft cloth and wring it out thoroughly — it only needs to be damp.
  4. Blot in one direction, working from the outer edge toward the center of the stain. No circular scrubbing.
  5. Wipe the area with a clean damp cloth to remove the soap, then blot dry.
  6. Stuff the shoes with dry paper to hold their shape and leave them in a breezy spot.

Several gentle passes beat one aggressive scrub: the felt comes clean while the surface stays intact.

Drying and keeping the shape

Felt dries slowly because the fibers are dense — and how you dry it decides whether the shoes keep their shape:

  • Air-dry in a breezy, shaded spot. No direct sunlight — heat shrinks the pressed fibers and lifts the sole adhesive.
  • No tumble dryer, no hair dryer, no radiators.
  • Stuff with uncolored paper or a shoe tree to hold the shape while drying.
  • When the shoes are nearly dry, brush lightly in one direction to raise the nap evenly again.

Deodorizing and storage

Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda inside the shoes and leave it overnight to absorb moisture and odor — brush the powder out before wearing. We cover this in more detail in removing shoe odor with baking soda.

For storage: use a breathable fabric bag instead of a sealed plastic one and keep the shoes in a dry place. Before the rainy season or a damp day out, a coat of water-repellent spray keeps water from soaking into the fibers — the cheapest prevention available for this material.

What not to do

  • No machine washing and no soaking the whole pair — felt shrinks, loses its shape and the sole glue lets go.
  • No hot water and no heat drying to "speed things up".
  • No hard circular scrubbing on the felt — it pills the nap and dulls the surface.
  • No bleach, concentrated vinegar or strong solvents directly on felt.
  • No drying in harsh sunlight to "kill the damp".

When should you send them to EXTRIM?

Oil stains, dirt that has soaked deep, a pair that shrank after one wet wash, a full-season buildup, or stubborn odor that survives home deodorizing — these need professional, material-specific treatment. EXTRIM's shoe cleaning and spa service cleans felt shoes with dedicated solutions and brushes and controls moisture during drying (deep cleaning from 150,000 VND per pair, heavy-duty cleaning 200,000 VND — 2026 reference rates; final price confirmed after inspection). For prevention, add the 3-layer nano water-repellent coating at 150,000 VND for fabric and felt shoes.
