Can You Wash Custom-Painted Shoes? Safe Cleaning Rules

Custom shoes — hand-painted, colored to your own design — are more popular than ever. The first question after finishing a pair is usually: can it be washed? The answer is yes, but the routine is completely different from ordinary shoes, because the surface is now a paint layer, not the original material.

Why custom shoes need their own cleaning rules

The color on a custom pair is acrylic paint applied over the upper. Paint bonds well, but it is still a thin coating: hard friction, long scrubbing or strong solvents will fade, smear or peel it off in patches.

After painting, finishers usually apply a sealant coat (an acrylic finisher) to protect the work. This layer helps resist water and fading, but it wears down over time and does not make the pair permanently stain-proof — so cleaning still has to be as gentle as on the paint itself.

Four rules for cleaning custom shoes

• Use a mild, neutral solution — diluted dish soap in warm water works — with a soft cloth or a soft-bristle brush.
• Dab and wipe only the soiled spots, very lightly; do not scrub the whole shoe the way you would an ordinary pair.
• Never soak the shoes: an ordinary pair can sit in water for 15–30 minutes, a custom pair cannot.
• No strong alcohol, acetone or bleach — they fade and stain the paint exactly where you scrub.

After wiping, let the shoes air-dry in a ventilated spot. Heat from direct sunlight or a dryer cracks the paint and opens the midsole glue.

Step-by-step cleaning routine at home

1. Remove the laces, wash them separately and let them dry.
2. Brush off loose dry dust with a soft-bristle brush, including the tongue and the sole grooves.
3. Dip a soft cloth into the diluted solution, wring it out thoroughly, and wipe each soiled area in gentle circular motions.
4. Wipe again with a clean damp cloth to remove soap residue — dried soap leaves blotchy stains.
5. Stuff the shoes with paper or shoe trees to hold the shape and let them dry fully for about a day.
6. Once dry, check the sealant coat: if it looks dull, reapply a shoe-specific finisher.

When the paint has faded, peeled or smeared

Do not paint new color over a dirty or peeling base: the fresh paint will lift with it after just a few wears. The base needs to be cleaned, the damaged paint treated, and only then repainted and sealed — that is the standard repaint process.
