Sneaker Care Tips Every Sneakerhead Should Know

Every sneakerhead knows the feeling of white shoes picking up street grime after a single day out. The problem is not how often you wash them, but how you wash and store them. Here is the basic routine for anyone wearing sneakers every day.
Hand wash — never machine wash
A soft brush with warm water and a dedicated shoe cleaner (or one teaspoon of dish soap in half a liter of water) covers most sneakers. Remove the laces and insoles and wash them separately. Work zone by zone: upper, tongue, midsole, and the outsole last.
The washing machine is a double-edged sword: the spin force and large water volume open midsole glue lines and deform the shape — especially risky on modern sneakers, which are held together mostly by adhesive.

Spot-treat stains as soon as you see them
Fresh stains are far easier to remove than stains that have sat for days. Dip a soft cloth in the cleaning solution and dab the spots instead of washing the whole shoe. For oil splashes on white shoes: blot the excess oil with paper first, then scrub gently with a soft brush and mild soap solution — the oil lifts out of the weave after a few passes.

The thing to avoid: bleach. Plenty of guides recommend a 1:5 bleach dilution for white shoes — do not do it. Bleach weakens the fabric, bleeds colored details, and often makes the treated area yellow again after a few wears. For soles or uppers that have already yellowed, a professional stain-removal service is much safer.
Leather sneakers — no soaking
Smooth-leather sneakers only need a wipe with a slightly damp soft cloth after each wear, then air dry. Soaked leather creases, stiffens and loses its finish. Condition them with a leather cream on a schedule, the same way you would care for leather boots.
Dry properly and keep the shape
- Stuff paper towels or rolls of paper inside the shoes: they absorb moisture from the lining that never evaporates on its own, and hold the toe shape so it does not shrink or crease while drying.
- Swap the paper once after the first few hours once it is saturated.
- Set them in moving air, a fan helps if you are in a hurry. No direct sunlight — sun exposure is the number-one cause of yellowed midsoles and white uppers.

Storage between wears
Only box up shoes that are fully dry, and keep them in a dry, ventilated place away from sunlight. A waterproofing spray before the rainy season keeps dirt from sinking into the weave. For a full walkthrough, see our Nike Air Force 1 cleaning guide and why white shoes turn yellow.
