How to Keep Leather Shoes From Cracking: 4 Simple Habits

Leather behaves like skin: the drier it gets, the more it cracks. Heat, water that sits too long and lack of conditioning are the three main reasons leather shoes peel and split. The good news — all three are preventable with a few simple habits.
1. Keep leather shoes clean — the foundation for everything else
- After each wear, brush off dust with a soft brush, working along the seams and creases — dust trapped in creases is where cracks start first.
- For visible dirt, wipe with a damp cloth and a little neutral soap, then wipe again with a clean damp cloth to remove residue.
- For suede and nubuck, skip water: use a suede brush or a suede eraser, brushing in one direction.
Dust left sitting on leather absorbs its natural oils and dries it out from within. Just brushing after each wear already extends the life of a pair noticeably.

2. Condition on a schedule
Leather needs moisturizing like the skin on your hands. Use a dedicated leather conditioner:
- Clean first and let the shoes dry completely before conditioning — conditioning over dirt locks dirt into the leather.
- Apply a thin layer in circular motions, let it absorb for 10–15 minutes, then buff with a soft cloth.
- Frequency: every 2–4 weeks for shoes worn regularly, or after any time they get soaked in rain.
Note: smooth leather and suede need different products — a cream conditioner for smooth leather, a spray conditioner for suede. Do not substitute with petroleum jelly or cooking oil: they create a temporary shine but can leave permanent-looking stains.
3. Waterproof before wearing
A quality water-repellent spray matched to the material keeps water, oil and dirt from sinking into the leather. Spray when the shoes are new or right after cleaning, holding the can about 20 cm away in thin even layers, and let them air dry before wearing.
Test on a hidden spot first to make sure the product does not change the color. Protection fades with each cleaning, so reapply regularly. For longer-lasting protection, EXTRIM offers a 3-layer nano waterproofing service at 150,000 VND per pair (2026 reference price).

4. Store them properly between wears
- Stuff shoes with paper or wooden shoe trees to absorb moisture and hold the shape.
- Keep them in a dry, ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
- Store in a breathable cloth bag instead of sealed plastic — leather needs to breathe; trapped humidity causes mold.
- Rotate several pairs: leather needs about 24 hours to release moisture after each wear.

Habits that crack leather fast
- Blow-drying, placing shoes near heaters or drying them in direct sun.
- Soaking leather shoes in water when cleaning.
- Using bleach, acetone, strong alcohol or all-purpose cleaners on the surface.
- Machine washing — the spin cycle loosens glue and creases leather in ways that are nearly impossible to undo.
