How to Restore Faded Fabric Shoes: 2 Safe Ways, Home to Studio

Color is often the first reason you pick a fabric shoe — and the first thing to fade: sun, rain, hard scrubbing and harsh detergents all wear it down over time. The good news is faded fabric shoes can be refreshed — how far you get depends on how much area has faded and the condition of the fabric. Below are two approaches: recoloring small areas yourself at home, and professional dyeing or repainting when the fading is widespread.

Way 1: Recolor small areas with a fabric marker

This works when the color has faded only in spots — the toe, the edge of the midsole, a small patch on the upper — and the shoe is canvas or coarse woven fabric. It is the technique sneaker customizers use, so if you don't need the original color, you can turn the faded patch into a new design altogether.

Preparation and steps:

  • Clean the shoes and let them dry completely before coloring; drawing over dusty or damp fabric makes the ink bleed and stick poorly. See the full process in our guide to cleaning canvas shoes at home.
  • Choose a dedicated fabric marker in the shade closest to the original color. Do not use ordinary stationery markers or watercolors.
  • Test on a hidden spot first: draw a small stroke, let it dry, then rub it hard to check whether the ink holds and whether it bleeds.
  • Apply several thin layers instead of one thick layer, always in the same direction; let each layer dry before applying the next.

Limits to know upfront: marker color rarely matches the original perfectly, it fades over time and can bleed if the shoes get wet often. Use it on fabric only — never draw on smooth leather, patent leather or suede, where the ink soaks in and leaves stains that cannot be cleaned off. If your shoe mixes materials (fabric and leather panels), mask the leather with paper tape before you start.

Way 2: Professional dyeing or repainting at a studio

When the fading covers a large area, the fabric is slightly worn, or you need the shoe back in its original color, recoloring by hand is rarely enough. This is when the shoe should go to a professional: the process involves a deep clean, treating the old color layer, applying paint matched to the original shade, and fixing the color so it holds better.

Results depend on the fabric and the original color — some unusual shades or heavily worn fabric can only be improved so far, so share photos of the actual condition first for accurate advice. Reference prices 2026: body repaint in white or black from 450,000 VND, multi-color repaint (two colors or more) from 550,000 VND; dyeing fabric to a custom color is quoted after inspection. See EXTRIM's shoe restoration service for details.

Keeping the color from fading again

  • Never dry shoes in direct sunlight — the sun is the single biggest cause of fading. Air-dry them in a shaded, ventilated spot.
  • Wash with a neutral detergent made for shoes; laundry powder and harsh bleach strip color fast.
  • Do not scrub hard back and forth when cleaning; scrub gently in circular motions.
  • Rotate between several pairs and store shoes away from light when not in use.

When should you send your shoes to EXTRIM?

Stop treating it yourself and ask for advice when: the fading covers a large area, the fabric is pilling or sagging, the shoe mixes materials, or a test patch has come out blotchy and uneven. EXTRIM cleans by material (deep cleaning 150,000 VND/pair, reference price 2026) and restores fabric shoe color based on the actual condition.
