Repairing Scratched Leather Shoes: What Can Be Fixed and When

No matter how carefully you treat them, leather shoes will occasionally pick up scratches from everyday knocks and scrapes. That smooth finish can get roughed up or lightly scuffed, hurting the overall look.

Here are a few tips for handling minor scratches at home yourself — plus how to recognize when it's time for professional help.

Category 1: Light Scratches (Surface Scuffs)

These are faint marks on the polish or outermost layer of the leather. You can easily handle them at home:

• Conditioner / Vaseline: Dab a little Vaseline or a dedicated leather conditioner onto a cotton swab and work it evenly into the scratch. The oils soften the leather and help the surface look more uniform in color.
• Shoe Cream: Apply a coat of matching-color shoe cream with a soft cloth, buffing in even circles. The cream fills in faint scratches very effectively.

Category 2: Deep Scratches (Peeling Flakes)

Here the leather has been scraped into tiny raised flakes. This takes a bit more patience:

• Carefully trim any raised flakes with small scissors. Never pull them by hand — you'll tear the leather's root layer and make it worse.
• Apply a very thin layer of dedicated leather adhesive and press the edges down to seal the tear. (For larger peels, we recommend taking the shoes to a professional.)

Category 3: Gouges / Larger Tears

When a blow has punctured the leather into the layers beneath, don't try to fill it with shoe polish yourself — it will only look worse.
