3 Ways to Clean White Rubber Shoe Soles at Home

White rubber soles are the fastest part of a sneaker to get dirty — and the easiest part to clean properly if you work in the right order. All three methods below use tools you already have and stay safe on rubber, though each has limits once yellowing has set in deep.
Method 1: Baking soda and detergent paste
Dry-clean first
Tap the two soles together outdoors to knock off loose grit, and use a stick or dull knife to dig mud out of the tread grooves. Then dry-brush the whole sole with an old toothbrush. The more dry dirt you remove now, the faster the scrub goes — and stay away from wire brushes, which scratch and tear the rubber surface.

Mix and scrub
Stir one tablespoon of baking soda with one tablespoon of laundry detergent in a small bowl — the baking soda works as a mild abrasive. Pick a detergent without bleach. If the soles are not too dirty, warm water with a few drops of dish soap is enough.

Dip the brush in and scrub the rubber in circles until it whitens again. Keep the paste on the rubber only — baking soda is hard to rinse out of fabric, so don't let it sit on the canvas. Afterwards, wipe everything down several times with a damp sponge or cloth until no residue is left; leftover paste dulls the rubber and makes the shoe slippery to wear.
Dry properly
Pat dry with a clean towel and let the shoes air-dry somewhere ventilated before wearing. Wet shoes breed odor faster and slide underfoot.
Method 2: Soak the soles in a soap tray
When grime covers the whole sole evenly, a quick soak beats spot scrubbing.
- Pour warm clean water into a tray about 2–3 cm deep — just enough to submerge the rubber sole, without touching the fabric upper.
- Add a few drops of mild dish soap and stir it in.
- Soak the soles for a few minutes so the water softens the grime; heavily soiled pairs can sit up to 15 minutes, checking that only the sole touches the water.
- Lift the shoes out, brush off what remains, and rinse clean.

One important note: some guides suggest adding bleach to the soak. Don't. Bleach makes white rubber yellow again faster and ruins the fabric the moment it splashes. Mild dish soap handles both white and colored soles just fine.
Method 3: Erase scuffs
City pavements leave black scuff marks and paint streaks on white soles. A shoe-specific eraser (or a clean white eraser) rubbed gently in one direction lifts the scuff along with its crumbs. Narrow zones — the midsole edges and the groove between midsole and outsole — are faster and safer with an eraser than with any liquid.
In the same group is a damp melamine sponge: water alone, effective on outdoor marks. Keep the sponge on rubber only; never drag it across the canvas or leather of the upper.
Chemicals that never touch the sole
- Bleach, acetone (nail polish remover), strong alcohol: they may whiten one patch quickly, but they cause blotchy discoloration, dry the rubber until it turns brittle, and eat away the surface — plus they ruin fabric colors on contact.
- Wire brushes: they scratch the sole face and leave dull streaks that trap more dirt than the original stain.
- Washing machines: the spin cycle pulls soles and midsoles apart, especially on glue-heavy shoes.
When to send your shoes to EXTRIM?
Once yellowing has soaked deep into the sole, baking soda and soaks almost never bring it back. At that point the realistic options are a white/black sole repaint at 450,000 VND (2026 benchmark) or a deep clean at 150,000 VND per pair depending on condition. See our shoe cleaning service or go straight to shoe restoration; final quotes depend on the actual sole condition.
