Cleaning Clarks Desert Boots: Suede and Crepe Sole Care

Clarks Desert Boots are the archetypal suede boot: a simple last, a light crepe sole and a suede upper that lasts years if cared for. The common mistake is cleaning them like canvas sneakers — which flattens the nap and leaves water marks. Here is the material-correct routine.

Suede upper: start with dry brushing

Dry dust on the nap is 80% of the problem. Use a suede brush in steady strokes, always in one direction, covering the toe, heel and side panels. Done regularly, brushing alone means the boots rarely need a deeper clean. Avoid scrubbing against the nap or pressing hard — a matted, roughened nap is very hard to restore.

For dried mud or road grime, let it dry completely, then brush a little more firmly with the soft metal-bristle face; brushing wet mud only smears it wider.

Scuffs and marks: use an eraser, never a knife

Older advice online suggests scraping stains with a blade — do not do this on suede. One slip tears the nap permanently. The safe method:

1. Brush away dust around the mark first.
2. Rub a suede eraser gently in circles or short strokes, focused on the stain only.
3. Brush off the crumbs, reassess, and repeat a few times at most.

If a mark stops fading, stop — more pressure leaves a bright halo around the old stain and roughens the nap.

Crepe sole: damp cloth only, no harsh soap

The crepe sole is porous rubber that absorbs water and degrades under strong detergents. Wipe it with a well-wrung damp cloth; for ground-in dirt, use a very diluted neutral soap on the cloth and rub lightly in circles. Never hold the sole under running water — soaked crepe takes ages to dry and can crumble.

The beeswax (Beeswax) version: a completely different routine

If your Desert Boots are the beeswax leather colorway, the suede advice above does not apply:

• Dust with a dry cloth or soft brush, then wipe lightly with a damp cloth.
• No regular soap on the leather — only apply a dedicated beeswax leather balm when the boots are clean and dry, following the product's instructions and testing in a hidden spot first, since wax darkens leather.
• Periodic waxing builds a light water-resistant film for the upper.

And suede itself never takes wax or cream polish — it clumps the nap and ruins the texture.

Waterproofing: the step worth investing in

Once the boots are clean and fully dry, spray a suede-specific waterproofing treatment over the whole upper, outdoors, 20–30cm from the surface, with a second pass once the first has dried. Reapply every 4–6 weeks with regular wear. The coating keeps light rain from staining the suede — the single most common cause of permanent suede damage. Mistakes to avoid

• Machine washing or soaking: it wrecks the nap and the crepe sole glue at once.
• Bar soap, toothpaste or all-purpose cleaners on the suede.
• Hairdryers, radiators or direct sunlight to "speed up" drying.
• Scraping stains with a blade or lifting dust with adhesive tape — both cause lasting damage.
• Waiting until the boots look filthy: a thin dust layer left for months wears down the color.
