Bag Cleaning Solutions at Home: Which Are Safe, Which to Avoid

Leather bags pick up dirt and skin oil constantly, and the internet is full of homemade cleaning formulas for them. The problem: not every formula is safe — several of them strip the leather's protective finish and cause stains that no longer wipe away. This article walks through the five solutions mentioned most often, separating the ones worth using from the ones to stop using.
Before you apply anything
- Test on the least visible spot (bag bottom, inner flap edge) and wait about an hour to check for discoloration.
- Pour the solution onto a soft cloth — never directly onto the leather. Wipe small areas in circular motions and dry immediately with a second cloth.
- Do not soak the leather: it needs time to dry, and standing water is how blotchy stains start.
- Suede and nubuck cannot take liquid solutions at all — these materials only get dry-cleaned with eraser blocks and purpose-made brushes.

1. A dedicated leather cleaner — the safest option

These products are formulated with a pH suited to tanned leather, lifting dust and skin oil without wearing down the finish. Apply a small amount to a white cotton cloth, wipe one area at a time, then dry it right away. Once the leather is fully dry, a leather conditioner helps keep it supple.
Choose a product made for tanned leather. Avoid all-purpose cleaners marketed for sofas or car interiors — their cleaning agents are usually stronger than bag leather tolerates.
2. Mild soap and warm water — the fallback at home

If you do not have a dedicated cleaner, mix 1–2 drops of mild dish soap into a cup of warm water. Dip in a cloth, wring it out hard until it is barely damp, wipe small areas, and dry them immediately. Use only uncolored, fragrance-free soap — heavy dyes and perfumes can leave marks on light leather.
This is a gentle method suited to routine wiping; against stains that have set deep into the leather, its cleaning power is limited.
3. Baking soda for grease stains — the right way
Grease is the hardest stain on leather, and baking soda handles it with patience: sprinkle a thin layer over the stain, leave it for several hours or overnight to absorb the oil, then brush the residue off with a soft cloth.
- Smooth finished leather only; never use it on suede, nubuck, or perforated leather.
- Test on a small area first — powder left on too long can leave a light mark on dark leather.
- If the stain survives one round, repeat rather than scrub. Scrubbing only pushes the grease further in.
4. Nail polish remover and alcohol — avoid
Both are frequently recommended for ink stains, but they strip the leather's protective finish, bleach the color, and dry the surface out. Damage from alcohol or acetone generally cannot be repaired in place — you end up with a bigger problem than the original ink dot.
Ink on tanned leather requires dedicated tools and technique. Leave it to professional care unless your bag's finish is explicitly ink-resistant.
5. Vinegar and olive oil, cream of tartar and lemon — avoid
These two formulas have circulated for years, and both rely on food acids:
- Vinegar and olive oil: the acid in vinegar eats away the protective finish, while olive oil leaves a greasy film that collects dust and yellows the leather over time — faster in a hot, humid climate like Saigon's.
- Cream of tartar and lemon juice: lemon acid bleaches, leaving pale blotches that show most on dark leather.
The common thread: they can look effective on some leathers at first, but the risk outweighs the benefit, and the mistakes cannot be undone.
