4 Shoe Styles You Should Not Wear Every Day

Some shoes look great but were never meant for daily wear. Wearing them every day leaves long-term effects on your feet — and wears the shoes out faster than you expect. Most of that damage can be repaired if caught early.

1. Heels over 10 cm

  • On your feet: body weight shifts onto the instep and toes, compressing nerves; years of shortened tendons can make even other shoes hurt.
  • On the shoes: all the load lands on the toe box and one tiny plastic heel tip. Heel tips wear off-center quickly; if you keep walking on a worn-out tip, the plastic cuts into the leather-covered heel — a much more expensive repair.
  • The fix: save them for special occasions and limit each wear to 2–3 hours. Check the heel tips monthly; replace them as soon as the rubber wears through.

2. Ballet flats

  • On your feet: the thin sole offers almost no arch support, so your feet absorb the full impact; over time this can lead to plantar fasciitis — painful inflammation along the bottom of the foot.
  • On the shoes: the thin sole wears through fast, the insole collapses early, and the shoes soon feel hollow underfoot.
  • The fix: add an arch-support insert to spread pressure more evenly, and rotate them with shoes that have softer soles.

3. Flip-flops and slide sandals

  • On your feet: your toes grip the strap to keep the sandal on, changing your gait; the exposed foot picks up cuts and scrapes easily, and long walks can even ache into the hips and back.
  • On the shoes: the toe strap takes constant pulling and is the first part to come loose; thin soles wear down fast at the heel.
  • The fix: choose sandals with thicker soles and arch support (cork footbeds are firm and supportive); keep flip-flops for short distances only.

4. Backless shoes (mules, backless sandals)

  • On your feet: every step forces your big toe to bend down and grip the shoe so it does not fly off; over time this raises the risk of hammer toes and mild ankle sprains.
  • On the shoes: the heel rubs constantly against the back of the shoe, wearing the heel area of the sole off-center and flattening the heel lining.
  • The fix: switch to slingbacks with an adjustable strap — still backless, but the foot stays stable without gripping.

Signs your shoes are wearing out from daily abuse

  • Heel tips worn off-center, plastic showing: replace them early, before they cut into the heel block.
  • Two soles worn unevenly, shoes tipping on a flat surface: uneven sole wear usually traces back to gait or shoe shape.
  • Soles polished smooth, slipping on wet floors: repair or resole them instead of waiting for a fall — see our piece on worn, slick sports-shoe soles.
  • Sole edge coming unglued: reinforce it before the separation reaches one third of the length to keep the cost down.
