How to Clean Suede & Nubuck Shoes Without Ruining the Nap

Suede delivers a luxurious, effortlessly stylish look — but it's notoriously unforgiving when it comes to cleaning. If your suede shoes get caught in the rain or pick up dirt, never wash them with water or ordinary soap: the nap will mat down and stiffen, permanently losing its original softness.
To remove stains from suede safely while keeping the fibers fluffy and fine, follow EXTRIM's three basic dry-cleaning steps below.
1. The Golden Rule: Keep Water to a Minimum
Suede has an open-pore structure that absorbs water — and whatever's dissolved in it — extremely fast. Once wet and left to dry, the leather tends to shrink and stiffen.
What you'll need:
- A dedicated suede eraser
- A crepe rubber brush (or a soft horsehair/bristle brush)
- A foaming cleaner formulated specifically for suede
2. At-Home Dry-Cleaning Routine (For Light Dirt)
Step 1: Brush out loose dirt Using a soft-bristle or rubber brush, gently brush the soiled area in several directions. This lifts away dust and grit from the surface and separates any matted fibers.
Step 2: Use a suede eraser Rub the suede eraser lightly over dark spots and dried stains. The friction lifts embedded grime out of the fibers. Afterwards, brush away the eraser crumbs.
Step 3: Spot clean with foaming cleaner For more stubborn stains:
- Spray the foaming cleaner directly onto your soft brush (do not dip it in water). Work it into the stained area in gentle circular motions.
- Blot the dirty foam out with a clean microfiber cloth. Don't scrub hard — you'll roughen the nap.
- Let the shoes air-dry naturally in a cool, ventilated spot, or use a fan on a cool setting (never apply heat).
Step 4: Brush the nap back up Once the shoes are completely dry, brush the surface in one consistent direction to lift the fibers back to their original fluffy state. If you have one, finish with a molecular nano water-repellent spray.
When the Damage Is Beyond a DIY Fix
For shoes that have been heavily scuffed, stained with old oil or grease, or faded by sun exposure, at-home cleaning simply won't restore them.
Rather than rubbing the leather until it tears, bring your shoes to EXTRIM. Our specialists will assess the actual condition and apply a deep-cleaning process, using high-quality dyes to restore the color of your suede shoes as safely as possible — while preserving the original texture of the nap.
