How to Clean Jordan 1s at Home: What You Can DIY and What to Leave to a Technician

A Jordan 1 usually combines several materials in a single pair: smooth leather, coated leather, suede or nubuck, and rubber soles. That's why the biggest risk of cleaning them at home is treating the entire shoe with the same amount of water and the same scrubbing pressure.

Inspect before you start

Remove the laces and insoles, and take photos of any dirty or scuffed areas so you can track your progress. Check whether dark panels sit next to white ones, whether the paint is cracking, or whether the suede is matting. If any of these are present, test your products on a hidden area first.

Prepare a soft brush for the upper, a separate brush for the soles, a microfiber towel, just enough clean water, and a cleaner rated for the material at hand. You don't need a lot of solution — it's excess moisture that causes stains to spread, not a lack of soap.

Clean section by section

1. Dry-brush first to lift loose dust and dirt off the surface.
2. Build foam on the brush or towel — never pour water directly onto the shoe.
3. Work in small sections, starting with the lightest panels, and blot dry as soon as the dirt is lifted.
4. Switch towels as soon as one picks up color or grime; don't drag dirty residue across clean white panels.
5. For suede, stick to dry brushing and suede-specific products; avoid wet scrubbing the way you would on smooth leather.
6. Clean the soles with dedicated tools so rubber residue never travels up onto the upper.

Never soak the whole shoe, never wring or twist it, and never apply direct heat. Stuff the shoes lightly with clean paper to hold their shape and let them air-dry in a breezy spot. Only store or wear them once the body, lining, and seams are fully dry.

When to stop

You should stop DIY treatment when:

• Red, black, or other dark colors start bleeding into lighter areas.
• The leather is peeling, cracking, or deeply scuffed.
• The soles are yellowed from oxidation, the glue is lifting, or the wear is uneven.
• The suede has matted, faded, or developed spreading mold.

These conditions call for a proper assessment of the material and the damage before deciding between cleaning, repainting, sole work, or regluing. Keep scrubbing and you'll usually lose even more of the surface.
